Individuals with cerebral palsy have difficulty with movement and maintaining posture. Either before or during birth some type of damage to the immature brain occurred.
What are the effects of having cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy affects a person’s ability to move, many individuals need orthotics, walkers, and wheelchairs for mobility. It also causes difficulty with speech, vision, hearing, and cognition.
What treatments are there for cerebral palsy?
There is not a cure for cerebral palsy, but there are therapies (physical, occupational, and speech) that can help. Equipment and adaptive technology such as communication devices, sit to stand wheelchairs, adaptive bikes allow for more independence and greater access to the world. Unfortunately, many gaps in funding for such therapies and technology exist. The JGL Foundation is trying to mend that gap.
